Weekend Warrior

From my nappy brother: People kept asking me if I was ready for the race, but honestly, the race wasn’t ready for me. I was sure of it, from the moment we parked the car outside of the Warrior Dash, this race was beneath me.

Happy 4th!

Happy 4th!

This has been a very busy week to say the least. Being of a certain age, that is having grand-babies, I came across my old highschool grad pic. It’s literally been more than ten years since I’ve taken that trip down memory lane. If anyone

Little things

Little things

Once I started sharing here, I have felt pressured to do things that I wouldn’t normally do – I wear makeup more often, style my hair, take pictures, little things, thinking, maybe I could get a good picture for the blog. Often I don’t, lol, but something in me has changed a bit, for the better. It makes you feel better when you take care of yourself, even if it’s only once or twice a week that you spend a little extra time to go for a walk, or braid your hair, or try a new dress. I have some great shots of the boys and really candid moments of myself, that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I’m usually the one behind the camera in my house, so there isn’t much of a record of my style, my expressions, my growth.

Happy Father’s Day!

I promise I’ll keep it short. Check out our new vid! The companion dvd has been totally redone and the book is a soft bound 100 glossy pages of locs done by us and fellow DIYers. If you have any questions after purchasing the system, we

Get out there

Get out there

A couple years after I graduated, I started to feel a little lost. The job I had always wanted wasn’t as much fun as I had hoped. After working so hard through school, I felt like I had arrived and the destination was… underwhelming. So

Let’s do better

I had started to daydream as I looked out of the huge window on a perfect sun filled day enjoying my lunch. A friend walked up and we chatted awhile, I can’t remember about what really, when she asked me if I were wearing a wig. I was kind of shocked at first but I thought it was  obvious that it was my own hair. It was what the kids would call today a mow hawk.  Earlier that summer I had gone to the hairdresser and she turned my afro into one of those “curls.” Not one of those greasy things that are the butt of jokes, but an actual mass of naturally curly looking ringlets. That’s before the rush to “curl” the masses and professionals just slapped whatever rod was available in their arsenal and beauty supply shops sold these kits to the masses and eventually everybody was doing it.

Competition is good for the consumer when it brings about a better product, but the curl only rushed in subpar services and products. We are on the threshold of repeating history. It seems that in the freedom to finally practice our craft, few if any have done research, only to post half tidbits of information to become hair gurus. When I started out, I wanted to be innovative.  I was blessed with the invention of a different tool design, different loc-king patterns, natural products and tons of friends family, and strangers, who answered my questions as well as allowed me to experiment on their hair. There were others as well, mavericks, that put out an excellent product. That was fifteen years ago and in this money grab,  this current natural hair phenomena, I don’t see new and improved, or different, just poor imitations of what’s out there. Nappylocs is a family tradition, part of a body of knowledge, so that little kinky haired girls never have to swing a towel, pretending to have long hair. Let’s do better.

This has been such a crazy week, so many new and exciting things on the horizon. I woke up this morning feeling more alive than I’ve been feeling for days, so as I rolled over and grabbed my phone to see today’s tidbits , I

Catching my Breath

Catching my Breath

Life has been so busy lately, I feel like I need a break. It seems like I do a little work, try and take care of my family, work on my home and the day is gone, with nothing ever feeling finished. I joke all

For the Fathers

For the last six weeks like many of you I’ve been riveted as we watch our nation go through this season of growing pains. I don’t know about you but for me everything is off, I’m behind in my gardening, I missed my Mothers Day post, Memorial Day celebrations have come and gone, and now Father’s Day is upon us. In a way, in this season of change is much like the spring weather here in the midwest. I’ve witness lightening while snowing, snow at easter, extreme heat, tornados, and gentle rains. But here in the MO and particularly in the land of the “big canoe” or  the “show me state” after the storm we are witnessing change and hopefully peace that comes after the storm.

This Memorial Day season I find myself reflecting back on the images I experienced as a little girl riding in the back of my dad’s old cadillac, undulating along those 2 lane highways of southern MO, Memphis, ending in Clarksdale Miss. That was in the early 60’s. I can remember as a small girl listening with my grandma on her radio and hearing the voices of King and Kennedy, but I digress…
I’ve been very fortunate, no blessed by having strong and powerful male influences as a kid. I’m not saying that I’ve arrived, heck no, but I’d just like to take a second and honor my dad. He was the son of a sharecropper, with barely an “8th grade education.” I can remember him going back to night school, working six days a week doing back breaking labor in demolition and in  steel sometimes working two jobs to feed his family. He often told us that he could teach us to work hard with our hands but he wanted us go to school and work hard with our minds. My dad had dirty jobs back in the day, when there was no OSHA. He is a man’s  MAN.

I know some of you are doing double duty, this is not a slight against you. I’d just like to give props to the dads, the men and the fellas that are holding it down for their love one’s and making the little ones like me “daddy’s girl” or boy, or niece, or nephew, or cousin or friend…..
Wish me luck!

The one question that I see most often on message boards and Facebook groups is whether locs and being active go together. Especially in the summer,  you’re out there running, swimming, playing tennis, you want to wash your hair after a good workout….you know…. get
